California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday Issues Statement on New York’s College Service Program

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Today, California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday issued the following statement on New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement that stated:

“…New York will found an inaugural class of the Empire State Service Corps Program in partnership with the State University of New York. Modeled after the California College Corps, the Empire State Service Program will provide paid work opportunities to college students as a way of serving their community.”

“We are excited New York took this significant step to invest in service and civic engagement,” said California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday. “We look forward to seeing the impact it will have on New Yorkers, the same way College Corps has benefited Californians.” In January 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the creation of the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps, a partnership with colleges and universities. This first of its kind initiative creates debt-free pathways for students to serve their communities while gaining valuable skills. In the first four years of the program, more than 10,000 California College Corps Fellows will serve their communities, tutoring and mentoring low-income students, distributing meals to those facing food insecurity and taking climate action.  Last year, Minnesota and Iowa announced the creation of the Midwest College Corps  Enrollment for the next academic year #CaliforniansForAll College Corps will kick off in March 2024.
