About California Volunteers

Led by the state’s Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday, California Volunteers is the state office tasked with engaging Californians in service, volunteering and civic action to tackle our State’s most pressing challenges while mobilizing all Californians to volunteer and serve in their communities.

Our Leadership

Josh Fryday was appointed California’s Chief Service Officer by Governor Newsom to lead service, volunteer and civic engagement efforts throughout California.

Our Commission

A 25-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Governor supports California Volunteers. Its role is to carry out the mission and objectives of California Volunteers and fulfill the statutory responsibilities for State Commissions under the National and Community Service Trust of 1993.

Volunteer Centers are organizations that connect volunteers to nonprofits and public agencies that need volunteers. The table below lists all California Volunteer Centers with links to their websites.

The #CaliforniansForAll service initiative was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to build on the efforts of California Volunteers to establish a statewide volunteer corps to help with the state’s response to emergencies and disasters. California Volunteers also administers the AmeriCorps programs in California with over 80 programs providing critical services to more than 160,000 Californians annually.
