Public libraries play a critical role in sustainability and climate action by serving as educational hubs, resource centers and leaders in environmental responsibility. Public libraries should be able to identify resources to provide climate literacy programs, workshops on energy efficiency and access to sustainability resources to help communities make informed decisions. Libraries also enhance community resilience by acting as cooling and hydration centers during extreme heat, offering disaster preparedness resources and supporting community gardens to promote local food security.”

The California State Library is excited to be a partner for the Climate Action Counts campaign. The State Library coordinated the Sustainable California Libraries federally-funded programming opportunities from 2022 to 2025 and continues to host quarterly virtual chats for California library staff and community partners interested in sharing programs and resources on climate, sustainability and resilience. California has more than 1,100 public libraries across the state. Check with your local public library to learn more about the educational opportunities and programs they may have available, including seed and tool libraries, mending and gardening classes, citizen science programs, and much more!
