Blazing Trails: Enhancing Wildfire Mitigation and Community Resilience
In Northern California, amidst the pressing challenges of climate change and surrounded by the resilient spirit of its communities, Rachel Ostrander found her calling with unwavering dedication.
Inspired by childhood journeys to national parks that ignited her love for nature, Rachel Ostrander embarked on an academic path of ecological restoration and climate science studies at Cal Poly Humboldt. After graduation, Rachel Joined the California Climate Action Corps in 2021 for the first of her three service terms. This marked a pivotal next step in her journey as she has been able to channel her knowledge and passion into practical action.
“As a fellow, I engage with communities and work on climate resilience projects in wildfire mitigation and community education, aligning with my goal of making a tangible difference in the fight against climate change,” Rachel said.
Rachel’s leadership following the devastating Camp Fire in 2018 underscored the crucial role of CCAC Fellows and community involvement in disaster resilience.
“Leading wildfire education lessons in Paradise in the wake of the Camp Fire was rewarding and emotionally intense. Witnessing the determination of local residents deepened my commitment to environmental education and climate action,” Rachel said.
Among her service milestones, Rachel has certified over 150 people in the Wildland Fire Assessment Program. This program is crucial for educating communities on effectively assessing and mitigating wildfire risks.
“This achievement enhanced community resilience against wildfires and fostered a sense of unity and proactive engagement among residents. The ability to contribute to such meaningful and impactful work fills me with pride and reinforces my commitment to environmental education and wildfire prevention,” she said.
As a CCAC team leader, Rachel now provides guidance, support and resources to ensure the success of CCAC Fellows.
“This position has allowed me to foster a collaborative and motivated team environment, essential for our collective achievements,” she said.
During her service term, Rachel has gained skills crucial for a career in environmental advocacy, as well as valuable professional and personal connections. It also provided her the flexibility to work on her master’s degree. in environmental management and policy. She recently completed her degree with the help of her Segal Education Award, earned through her CCAC service.
Service has not only enriched her journey but also sharpened her focus on a future dedicated to environmental advocacy and policy.
“The hands-on experience and the tangible impact of our efforts have inspired me to pursue a career at an environmental nonprofit or in climate action policy. I’ve seen firsthand how education and proactive measures can drive significant change and I want to continue contributing to these initiatives on a broader scale,” Rachel said.
As she looks ahead with sharper skills and a deepened commitment to climate action, Rachel is poised to continue making a significant difference in environmental advocacy and policy, driven by the transformative experiences and opportunities provided by the California Climate Action Corps.
