Chris Ashley, Youth Service Corps

Learning and Leading, One Plate at a Time

What inspired you to join Youth Service Corps?

I joined UniverSoul Café (which is supported by Youth Service Corps) to help my mom with her goal of fighting food insecurity — and to learn new skills, meet people, and earn some money while doing something that matters. It’s been an amazing way to grow and give back at the same time.

How has your experience in your job impacted you and your community?

When I started, I honestly didn’t know much about food insecurity or how big of an issue it is for unhoused people. But through working together and learning as a team, we’ve built real knowledge and confidence. Now we’re not just helping distribute food — we’re becoming student leaders who understand the whole food ecosystem and how to make a difference.

What’s your dream job?

My dream is to be a professional MMA fighter and also a restaurant owner/chef. I love the drive and discipline both take. And if plans ever change — no worries — I believe in always having a backup plan and keeping your goals flexible.

What’s something you did during your job that makes you feel proud?

I’m really proud of how our team learned to handle food safely — how to reduce waste, store food the right way, recover what can be reused, and make sure nothing goes to waste. It feels good to know we’re keeping people safe and helping food go where it’s needed most.

How has Youth Jobs Corps inspired you for your next steps?

Working in food service opened my eyes to what it takes to run a business — teamwork, timing, and responsibility. It inspired me to dream about owning my own restaurant one day (if my MMA career doesn’t take off!). Either way, I want to keep learning, leading, and building something that helps people.
