BBC.com: The climate movement greening California’s streets
By Carl Nasman, Washington DC, August 6, 2024
Bored of the usual nine to five? How about a job as a city greener? Julia Gallaway is part of a growing army of professional tree planters and food composters – and, unlike most of us, when she is at work she gets a lot of attention.
“People are asking all sorts of questions,” she tells me during a recent interview. “They really want to understand why we’re out there and what we’re doing.”
Gallaway is a fellow with the California Climate Action Corps, the first statewide programme in the US to put people to work combatting the effects of climate change.
Passersby are always very excited when they hear about the programme, Gallaway says. “They never knew it was a possibility.”
